Fiction offers a wonderful mirror into the minds and emotions of persons of the Gilded Age, or of any era, for that matter. People living in our era have a great advantage in that so much fiction is avaiable for free, on line. The novels, plays, and short stories I've included here cover a wide spectrum--humor, advocacy, mystery, romance, and about as many different points of view as one can imagine.
This is the reason I want you to choose one of these, more, if you have time, and read it before the end of the semester. You can also choose some of the fiction under E-Texts. I would move the Horatio Alger books to this page, for example, but it takes time that I'm not sure I have. Look at a few before you make a final choice. Some of these you may have heard of, others, most likely not. Not all of these made the list of "respectables" taught in English literature classes.
